The Bethany Care Society announced Nov. 10 plans to stop accepting applications for its supportive living option at Airdrie’s Arbor Manor community.

“The decision was based on the lack of financial viability of the program. The newer supportive living options that are now available to seniors in Airdrie have impacted that,” said Shelley Rolfe, administrator at Arbor Manor. “We’re no longer able to remain competitive in the local market place.”

According to Rolfe, the 25 residents currently in Arbor Manor’s supportive living program will not be impacted by this decision.

“We’re just not admitting any new (individuals) into the program,” she said. “Nothing is really going to change for (those currently in the program).”

Arbor Manor’s supportive living program was for those residents who are fairly independent. There are eight staff currently working in that program.

“They might have a little bit of support for care – medications and care,” Rolfe said.

Arbor Manor is also home to 74 residents in its long-term care program. Residents in this program require much more medical intervention and support than those in the supportive living program.

Arbor Manor, opened in 1987, is operated by the Bethany Care Society. Bethany Care opened its first facility in Calgary in 1946, since growing to include facilities all over southern and central Alberta. It offers a variety of programs for seniors, including supportive care, long-term care and specialized dementia care.
